Do it yourself tech support

This is what a WordPress Dashboard looks like on the computer

I attended college later in life than most people. It was in my early 30s and I was still writing long hand. I was a writer and did not even have a typewriter. Personal computers had just come on the scene and I did not know how to use a mouse.

My astronomy professor convinced me to get a typewriter. He thought I should get a computer, but I was not in a position at that time to do so. Eventually I bought my first PC and taught myself how to set it up, use it and upgrade it. Do it yourself tech support.

Things are pretty much the same for me now and I still do all my own tech support. I also create all my own websites. I lack talent artistically speaking, so you will not see the most beautiful websites from me.

After a long stint at the Wickenburg Sun newspaper, I dabbled in a few classes to see where I could take my writing skills. I took a class in writing HTML computer code and I enjoyed it, but I would have had to focus a lot of time learning that skill.

After those classes, I landed a short-term job at another newspaper where I was first introduced to WordPress.

The wonders of WordPress

WordPress is amazing. It is a plug and play website platform. It is open and it is free with tons of contributors who offer many plugins/add-ons. More than 35 percent of all websites on the Web are built on the WordPress platform, and it is surprising that this number is not higher.

The nice thing about WordPress is that even though it is plug and play style, one can truly customize a site with HTML knowledge. One can also mess it up like I did yesterday.

I deleted my widget for subscribing to the blog while performing site maintenance. In that deletion, I thought I lost my entire subscriber list and sent a panic message to many of you.

As it turn out, the subscriber list might not have been deleted. If that is the case and you receive double emails, please contact me and I will fix it.

Do it yourself tech support is certainly a way to save money, but it can be a bit risky. The new plug in I am using for subscribing is much better so there is a sliver lining to my mistake.

You could have a free website

Prior to the start of the Coronavirus pandemic, I was beginning to help my friend Patti learn how to use WordPress. She is also an incredible writer and photographer. The WordPress platform is not only free, but WordPress will also host your website for free with a WordPress extension attached to your chosen domain name.

This is great for anyone who would like a web presence without paying for a web hosting package. You still need to register a domain name though and they come with a small yearly fee.

I use a web hosting company that allows me to post as many websites as I would like for $150 a year. For me, it is worth every penny.

If anyone ever has any questions about creating and hosting a website, feel free to reach out and ask me. I would not say I am an expert, but I know my way around. And I don’t always pat myself on the back, but when I think that I went from a girl in college who could not even type to a self-taught website creator, it brings a little joy to my heart.
