This tradition has baffled me for many years. There is nothing patriotic about professional sports, nothing, and now the anthem has become one big controversy. The national anthem is no longer a relevant feature of professional sports and it needs to go.
The Star-Spangled Banner started playing at professional sporting events September 5, 1918 during a baseball game in Chicago. They played the song to unify during a time of sorrow. Now, it is destroying this country over an array of personal affronts. Offended, people are using the flag and anthem as weapons against each other.
Folks …. We are talking about professional sports. Please. Do we play the national anthem before concerts? No. Before our first show of the day on Netflix? No. Why do we play a patriotic song before a lucrative sporting event? Where is the nexus here? Is it just a feel-good tradition?
Traditions can change.
The real anthem should be Money
If everyone needs an anthem to feel better before a professional sporting event, why not play Pink Floyd’s Money? Ever read the lyrics?
“Money, get away
Get a good job with good pay and you’re okay
Money, it’s a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four-star daydream
Think I’ll buy me a football team.”
That is just the first verse
Let us stop pretending that professional sports have anything to do with patriotism and let us stop playing the national anthem before these events begin. What if we play Money before Monday Night Football. Who will take a knee?

Do not get the wrong idea
I am not against the knee nor am I against nonviolent protesting. But for decades I have been against the playing of the national anthem ahead of for-profit entertainment events.
And to be totally honest, I feel this way about the Olympics as well. This beast requires a ton of cash and a bit of patriotism. But Money still applies. Also, free condoms for athletes. This was for those who did not know that tidbit of information.
U.S. Soccer this week repealed its ban on protests during the national anthem. So more and more we can argue over whether athletes should be kneeling during the anthem or not kneeling during the anthem. All the while the money is flowing out of all our pockets into all theirs.
They are manipulating us
Judge the situation for yourselves. It seems the national anthem is no longer a relevant feature of professional sports especially with it causing so much strife.
I opt for peace and we are not getting any peace when it relates to sports and the national anthem or any flag of any kind right now. Remove them all from profitable events so we can all chill out a bit and have one less thing to fight over.
